Last November 13, 2018, Aikontech which is a 35-year-old company has brought its hearing-aid products to the Philippines.</div>

To put things in perspective, according to the World Health Organization, there are around 250 million people with hearing disabilities and hearing impairment in the world. About 2/3 of these identified people live in Asia and the Philippines along with Indonesia is among the Top 4 in that list.</div>

The prevalence of hearing disabilities in this region can be attributed to several factors such as congenital, work-related, accident injury/trauma, and even lifestyle (those who go to loud venues and concerts or work in them).</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">During the 2017 National Science and Technology Week, the new RxBox was presented on exhibit. HealthTech.PH has already featured the RxBox in its publications before and the new RxBox is proof of the success it has been in the public health sector.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The RxBox is the result of the cooperation between the National Telehealth Center, The DOST and UP Diliman. According to Dr. Portial Marcelo, director of the National Telehealth Center, the RxVBox can also function as a diagnostic tool since it can monitor the patient’s  heart rate, pulse rate, blood and blood oxygenation. The RxBox enables remote consultations between patients, community health workers, and urban based experts. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The RxBox is deployed in remote rural communities and communities that have a high poverty incidence. This is very important to the public health sector since statistics cite that 60% of Filipinos die without seeing doctors and professional medical practitioners. The hackathon last Feb 4 – 5, 2017 generated 20 technology driven solutions for healthcare and the medical field. Developing and coding the solutions overnight within a span of 20 hours, these solutions were generated after undergoing mentorship from a diverse group of consultants ranging from technical to business acumen of mentors.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Team YouthHack developed a smartphone app that would help in ensuring that Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) be done properly and correctly. Citing statistics on the mortality rate of heart attack victims, the timely application of  CPR will spell the difference between life and death. Upon utilization  of the app at a time of emergency, the smartphone will tell through voice prompts if the procedure is being done correctly by the one conducting the CPR. </span></div>

<br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br />The long anticipated immunization program against dengue fever was launched in the Philippines this past week. The program initially vaccinated 600 schoolchildren in Manila with the objective of 1 million children to be immunized against dengue in 2016.<br /><br />Half the world’s population is now at risk of Dengue Fever due to its rapid spread around the world. Decades have been spent in developing the vaccine. The vaccine first got approval last year in December in Mexico. This is not the only vaccine against dengue being developed and it is only part of a larger effort against the disease which includes controlling the mosquitoes that are the carriers of dengue fever.<br /><br />Dengue causes flu-like symptoms and has no specific treatment since it is a viral disease. Fatality rates can reach up to 20%. There is an estimated 390 million dengue cases annually which is a 30 fold increase in the last 50 years.<br /><br />Dengue has had cases in 100 countries while in the 1970s there were only 9 countries that experienced dengue cases.<br /><br /><br />Currently, Sanofi is undertaking studies on Dengvaxia, administered 3 times in a year and is claimed to have an 80% success rate in dengue hospitalizations. The US National Institutes of Health conducted a study with a 100% success rate.<br /><br />Dengvaxia, which is approved for use in individuals aged 9 to 45, is registered in the Philippines, Mexico, Brazil and El Salvador, with regulatory review processes underway in other countries. In the Philippines, students who are nine years old or older are being vaccinated. The vaccinations are free and presently taking place in public schools in Manila. The Department of Health has allocated 3 billion pesos for the initial immunization program.<br /><br /></span></div>

This involved the devolution of certain national government responsibilities to the local government level. Among these were income generation/sharing and healthcare. Unfortunately, the devolution of healthcare made for an inequitable distribution of services and resources wherein local governments with less resources had to contend with greater healthcare demands. Thus, according to statistics 3 out of 10 Filipinos die without the attendance of a doctor. This also goes for hospitals with inadequate staffing and equipment. This is the area that healthcare reforms are very much needed.<br /><br />With the 2016 Presidential Elections, the healthcare policies and programs by the different candidates are presented.<br /><br />Vice President Jejomar Binay<br /><br />1.    Easy access to quality healthcare for every Filipino. The strengthening and promotion of preventive healthcare through comprehensive immunization, sanitation and nutrition. Access to affordable  hospitalization based on ability to pay.<br />2.    The rural LGUs will be given special attention especially in far-flung areas with limited resources and areas with the highest poverty incidence.<br />3.    Coordination by public and private health institutions so as to develop and implement an automated data collection and dissemination system.<br />4.    Universal health insurance system.<br />5.    Healthcare infrastructures (soft and hard) such as hospitals, health centers, equipment, laboratories, support services and health professionals are available to provide quality and complete services.<br /><br />Rodrigo Duterte<br /><br />1.    Review all local antismoking ordinances to ensure conformance with national antismoking laws.<br />2.    Preventive health programs must be sustainably pushed, particularly adequate nutrition.<br />3.    A national daily exercise program will be established.<br />4.    Equitable implementation of the reproductive health law.<br />5.    100-percent Philhealth coverage for all Filipinos.<br />6.    All provinces must have a tertiary hospital with an intensive care unit.<br />7.    All regions should have an advanced tertiary health-care facility to include a heart, kidney and lung center capable of transplants and advanced cardiovascular interventions. This will decongest current specialty hospitals in Manila under the Department of Health and encourage specialty practice in the countryside.<br /><br />Grace Poe<br /><br />1.    Augmenting government health resources by harnessing private healthcare providers for universal healthcare funding.<br />2.    Prioritization of preventive healthcare and a voucher system that will provide for free primary healthcare and outpatient services.<br />3.    Reduction and rationalization of prices of medicines.<br />4.    Adequate funding for Family Planning clinics in promoting responsible parenthood.<br /><br />Mar Roxas<br /><br />1.    100% Philhealth Membership<br />2.    Capacity building for public healthcare facilities<br />3.    Barangay Health Units that can provide immediate and quality healthcare<br /><br />Miriam Defensor Santiago<br /><br />1.    Expand coverage of Philhealth<br />2.    Financing mechanism for the poorest of the poor<br />3.    Stopping the endorsements of public officials as a requirement for PCSO health assistance.<br />4.    Oppose privatization of public healthcare institutions<br />5.    Availability of vaccines and medicines in barangay health centers.<br />6.    Improvement of facilities in barangay health centers.<br />7.    Full implementation of the Reproductive Health Law<br /></span></div>
