From the Internet of Things (IoT), Electronic Medical Records (EMR), new equipment and diagnostic tools, analyzers and the use of mass spectrometers, technology has proven to be a game changer in healthcare and medicine.

Adding to that is the use of the internet when communicating with healthcare professionals, the transmission of patient date as seen in the RxBox and the DOH’s use of Telehealth systems. On important factor is that communications include social media.

But healthcare is very different than other professions with regards to the use of social media, obviously health and life cannot brook mistakes. But there is no avoiding the use of social media even by healthcare professionals and patients themselves.

Social Media can be a powerful tool in educating people about health and healthcare and also with opening the lines of communication between patients and their healthcare professionals that include physicians and other consultants.

1. Important details needed about the use of social media is what constitutes “helpful” information as compared to “harmful” information found in social media?
2. What about the traditional practice of all health issues and concerns be discussed inside the clinic and the new technology enabled communications between physician and patient in social media?
3. What are the boundaries on what is discussed between the patient and physician in social media. It may seem to be a stupid question but can consultations and questions between the patient and physician be subject to “extra-billing?”

These and more issues and concerns will be discussed in the Philippine Healthcare and Social Media Summit 2017.

Now on its 3rd year, the organizer HealtXPh for the summit with this year’s theme of “Social Media and Health Research Connections that Matter.”
