<span style="font-size: large;">It is acknowledged that the public healthcare system in the rural areas of the country does not meet the need of the said population sector. The rural population accounts for 60% of the entire population of the country.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Local health governance is now being given the attention it has been needing. Using technology not available 10 years ago, access to quality health-related data by local health professionals, the local chief executives in the rural LGUs and policy makers will benefit from WAH. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The Wireless Access for Health Initiative (WAH) is a result of a public-private partnership that goes back to the year 2009.  Currently, the WAH Initiative is partnered with over 100 Local Government Units (LGUs) and is involved in assisting the LGUs to improve and manage their local health units with the use of the WAH Digital Platform.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">WAH consolidates process management innovations, wireless, mobile, and digital communications technologies that result in a clinic-centered health information platform that is used in Rural Health Units (RHUs) by health workers and professionals.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">WAH is used to collate, store and transmit information from the RGHUs to their LGU Health Office and Provincial Health Office. The information and data is critical in the decision-making process of their LGUs and Provincial governments.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Aside from transmittal and storage of data, WAH is able to generate reports that are compliant with the format of the Department of Health (DOH).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This enables the decision makers to have accurate data for analyzing, evaluating and determining the healthcare requirements of their constituencies.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Patient records are easily retrieved by healthcare professionals thus this speeds up the process of checking up and visiting patients resulting in more patients getting care.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Currently, the system has grown to 106 clinics in 65 municipalities, 4 cities, and 24 provinces across the Philippines six of which are Geographically  Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA). </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Using laptops, PDAs and Tablets, the WAH system is used in the collation of data, organizing data and even analysis. Patients are also given access to information, provides health and wellness related education.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The WAH Initiative recently won 3rd Place in the HealthTech Challenge competition held at the Asian Institute Of Management and was organized by the Swiss Embassy and the AIM in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Switzerland.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The recently held Hackathon by HealthHacks had 80 participants and that comprised 20 teams. The hackathon last Feb 4 – 5, 2017 generated 20 technology driven solutions for healthcare and the medical field. Developing and coding the solutions overnight within a span of 20 hours, these solutions were generated after undergoing mentorship from a diverse group of consultants ranging from technical to business acumen of mentors.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The hackathon participants came from colleges and universities with those as young as senior high school and college level students. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Team YouthHack developed a smartphone app that would help in ensuring that Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) be done properly and correctly. Citing statistics on the mortality rate of heart attack victims, the timely application of  CPR will spell the difference between life and death. Upon utilization  of the app at a time of emergency, the smartphone will tell through voice prompts if the procedure is being done correctly by the one conducting the CPR. </span></div>

This app enables the user to check any locality in the country for health hazards such as Dengue Clusters or any outbreak of any disease. It uses GPS together with drawing health data from institutions in the area. It features demographics and will give the user data on the health hazards in the locality.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Team OZONE conceptualized a Fitness oriented app. It is akin to a health app pretending to be a Role Playing Game.  Its core function is to give points to those who play the game which in reality is a series of activities that will generate wellness for the user. E reward can be discounts to health related and wellness products that will enable them to have fun will living a healthy lifestyle.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br />Now on its third year, HealthHacks is a 2 day marathon or hackathon that aims to involve students to engage in developing and crafting solutions for healthcare and medicine using technology. These will be the products on intense focus of the participant during this event.<br /><br />There are currently 80 participants in this year’s hackathon composed of 20 teams. The hackathon is is being held at the Microsoft Philippines Head Office at 6750 Ayala Ave., Makati City.<br /><br />The hackathon will start at exactly 1:30 p.m. on February 4, 2017 and will go on uninterrupted until 12 noon February 5, 2017. <br /><br />HealthHacks hackathon started its acceptance for this year’s participants since 2016. Registration was extended up to January 17, 2017.<br /><br />Recognizing the necessary and ever increasing use of technology in bringing solutions to healthcare and medical issues and problems, the hackathon is harnessing the creativity, intelligence and ingeniousness of the youth. <br /><br />Participants are from Senior High School and collegiate students. The reason for the age requirement is that the age gaps between the participants be kept to a minimum.<br /><br />Teams were formed composed of 3 – 5 members each and they may come from varying fields of discipline. What is important is that the team be able to develop a solution, have the solution coded or programmed so the solution developed can be demonstrated in front of judges. During the development of the solutions, there are mentors who will be resource persons for the teams wherein experience based guidance will be available.<br /><br />Viability of the solution developed together with the impact to be created in healthcare and the medical field will be the prime criteria for the top three winners of the completion.<br /><br />The top three teams will be announced on the afternoon of February 5, 2017.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Marvin Trecenio, Byron Jan Mairina and Justine Louise Villanueva, all students of Urdaneta City University (UCU) won the Php100,000 award from the Google Developers Group’s Android Masters. This is a competition between colleges for android programmers.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The four students developed NutriVision an app that provide nutrition facts.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">193 colleges and universities participated in the competition and NutriVision won the top plum nothwitstanding that it was the first time for UCU to join the competition. It took 4 months for the team to develop the app. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Another award for the app was for being the most downloaded application in a 2 week span. Trecenio said that NutriVision can be downloaded from Google Play with no payment. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The app has four options, search food, capture food, browse for food photos and pronounce the name of the food.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">With the “search food” option the user inputs the name of the food desired and its nutrition details will be provided. While the “capture food” feature enables the user to know the nutrition details of a food that the user took a picture of.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The app is useful in monitoring food intake with regards to healthy nutrition habits that will also be beneficial for those who have to watch their diets.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">While hackers could leverage exploits to modify systems and cause physical harm to other humans, it's more likely they'll be motivated to use stolen data for financial gain, said SAS' Gross.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><span>It is interesting to observe the stages 
of where the Philippine Startup community is at.  A few years back, 
everyone was excited to start something.  This is not to say that people
 are not excited to start something at this time.  It's just that way 
back then, everyone was into ideation.  In the heirarchy of characters 
in the enterprise there are visionaries, leaders, managers, and the 
'soldiers'. The active participants back then were the visionaries.<br /><br />Then
 came the stage wherein the founders' vision was laid out and the 
startup had to be given flesh.  Minimum Viable Product or MVP was the 
goal at the quickest possible time.  Thus the urgent need to partner 
with a good Chief Technology Officer.  Those who were good at coding and
 building the product, the inherent tech guys, did not have a problem 
with this.  They just simply built their product the best way they 
could.<br /><br />Fast forward to today, with thousands of apps and 
platforms built, the natural hurdle is taking the entire idea of the 
startup to the market.  Three to four years after all the fanfare first 
took place about tech startups, the fledgling tech enterprises are now 
beginning to realize the real role that marketing plays in the 
operation.<br /><br />With investors showing some signs of impatience with 
the young leaders who pitched the fantastic idea to build the next "Uber
 of something", the startup founder now realizes that an emphasis on a 
Marketing Guy should have been given as much emphasis as the Chief 
Technical Officer.  Note that I have not referred to a title of Chief 
Marketing Officer.  Real marketing guys know a marketing job that needs 
to get done without having to embellish themselves with such a title 
(Sorry, I'm quite old school and I'm only used to VP for Marketing).<br /><br />As
 a person who comes from the mainstream advertising, there is an old 
saying that goes, "Selling a product without advertising is just like 
sending smoke signals at night.  You know what you're doing, but no one 
else does".  I think this encapsulates what a lot of startups are doing.<br /><br />Yes,
 it is good to develop your product with all the bells and whistles, but
 remember not to overspend both time and finances on that.  You'll need 
to take it to the market.  This is where the marketing guy comes in.  If
 he is a co-founder, he will be the one to temper the executive team 
with the realities of budget and timelines to take your product to the 
public.<br /><br /><b>What To Look For In A Marketing Co-Founder</b><br /><br />In
 the same way that there are varying levels of proficiency among CTOs, 
so it is on the marketing side.  There are levels of proficiency in 
terms of handling the marketing efforts of a startup.  Offhand, here is a
 basic checklist of what you need to look for in your marketing person:</span></span><span style="font-size: large;">

<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Thorough knowledge of marketing principles, brand, <br />       product </span><span>and service management</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Superb analytical skills</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Flexibility</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Passionate customer advocacy</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Well rounded knowledge of media and audience contact <br />       points</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Deep understanding of changing market dynamics</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span>    Entrepreneurial spirit</span></span></li>

</span><span style="font-size: large;"><span><br />If you are a startup founder, a lot 
of these have to be in you as well.  Some though can rest heavily on 
your Marketing Co-founder.  His or her responsibilities will have to 
include overseeing the planning, development and execution of the 
startup's marketing and advertising initiatives. Reporting directly to 
the rest of the executive team, the primary responsibility is to 
generate revenue by increasing sales through successful marketing for 
the entire organization, using market research, pricing, product 
marketing, marketing communications, advertising and public relations.<br /><b><br />Where to look</b><br /><br />In
 the same way that the startup ecosystem is huge and can be narrowed 
down to alleys of FinTech, HealthTech, IoT, Media, Games, etcetera, so 
is the world of advertising and marketing.  You can't just pull in 
anyone to be your marketing co-founder just because he has a "marketing 
background".  Even someone in MLM and Network Marketing has a "marketing
 background".<br /><br />Just because someone came from an ad agency does 
not mean they came from one that has a defined method of creating the 
marketing plan.  There are people who come from graphic design studios 
and there are those who come from boutique agencies.  There are those 
who come from creative agencies and those who come from media agencies.<br /><br />It
 is nice to have someone from the creative agency.  Creativity is cool. 
 However, if the order of the day for CTOs are the MVP, the equivalent 
delivery of the marketing co-founder is traction.  Creativity is not a 
main multipier in creating traction.  This is where the guy from the 
media agency comes in.  <br /><br />The guys from the media agency have a 
different discipline.  Their emphasis is on a valid and relevant contact
 point for the message to be delivered rather than the message itself.  
Channels not content.  In comparison to the guys in creative, they are 
the less flamboyant and can be perceived as boring for they are the 
number crunchers.  The ones who deal with statistics and ratings.  They 
are the ones who dealt with consumer behavior, media consumption habits,
 and demographic profiling long before the startup revolution gave birth
 to a fancy word called "Big Data".  Charts and graphs are really their 
domain.<br /><br />Adept knowledge of the media landscape and media 
consumption habits could spell the difference between saving or wasting 
your investor's money.  Simply put, a marketing guy with a level head 
about <u>all</u> media because in the final analysis, your marketing 
budget may be split 3:1 or even 4:1 in favor of media costs versus 
production/creatives.<br /><br />With these kinds of skill sets, it would be
 wise to look for them among those who work (or used to work) for media 
agencies, brands and product management, or even media research 
companies.</span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">
