 <span style="font-size: large;">Duke University and Stanford University doctors and engineers are developing an ultrasound device that can be an equivalent of more expensive 3D imaging with just the addition of a chip that costs US$10.00</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">Dr. Joshua Broder, MD, who is an associate professor and emergency physician at Duke Health, Durham, North Carolina, USA came up with the idea when he was playing the Nintendo Wii game console with his son.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">Observing that  the Wii console was able to track the controller accurately, he concluded that the same principle can be done when a similar device can be “slaved” to a hand-held ultrasound probe.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">When presented at the American College of Emergency Physicians Research Forum in Washington, D.C., the innovation showed potential in emergency medicine applications.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">This device can be used in lieu of the more traditional MRI and CT Scan machines that cost five times than the ultrasound system being used.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The requirement that in order to generate a 3D image, there must be precise and accurate tracking and orientation of the ultrasound probe enables the “modified” probe to stitch hundreds of individual slices of the anatomy thus generating a 3D image.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The next step after a year was for Dr. Joshua Broder to bring his ideas to Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering. Together with undergraduate Matt Morgan and instructors and professors in biomedical engineering  Carl Herickhoff and Jeremy Dahl both of whom have since moved to Stanford University, the device is still being developed further. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The chip, the size of a fingernail is attached to an ultrasound probe and is connected to a laptop that has been inputted with a developed program for the device. In a matter of seconds, a 3D model is generated. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The device which is a standard ultrasound probe has the chip attached to it and is used in its regular way to generate the 3D image.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The prototypes were created at Duke University’s 3D printing laboratory. The next step is or trials to determine how best to use the device in patient care. Also, development is going further in enabling the device to adapt to other 3D imaging machines.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The device has good potential in generating 3D images where MRI and CT Scan devices are not available such as rural areas and in developing countries.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">In 2014, the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (BNEFIT) has set the goal to achieve at least 60,000 jobs in the ICT industry by 2022, including HIM jobs.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The 1st Bacolod Healthcare Information Management (HIM) Conference held last August 17 and 18, 2017  at SMX Convention Center – Bacolod successfully gathered local stakeholders to scale up the potential of the countryside in attracting HIM jobs, opportunities and investments, and bring everyone on the same page in the area of HIM education and training. The first day saw more than 300 students while the second day gathered leaders and executives from colleges universities and training institutions, medical and healthcare and IT companies, national and local government executives, real estate developers and other private-sector stakeholders. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Maraňon, Jr. in his speech said the province is “at the threshold of a new beginning to expand and conquer another industry – the healthcare information management.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Our joint target with BNEFIT for Bacolod and Negros Occidental is to successfully expand to three areas - software development, a creative process like game development and animation and in healthcare information management, Maraňon said.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">BNEFIT Executive Director Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said of this target, 5,000 are targeted to be from the HIM sector which covers the whole spectrum of health services that require voice, non-voice, data analytics and information management such as medical coding and billing, and medical transcription, among others. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The Healthcare Information Management of the Philippines (HIMAP) Director Raymond Ang said the healthcare BPO market is projected to reach US$ 276.79 Billion by 2021 from US$170.47 Billion in 2016, growing at a CAGR of 10.2% during the forecast period from 2016 to 2021. In the Philippines, as of 2016, there are 118,000 workers in HIM and we the projected annual growth rate of 10 percent, the industry forecast is 210,000 jobs by 2022, Ang in his presentation said.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Judilyn Caňete, president of MedStar Philippines Healthcare Information Management, a New York based company which recently expanded to Bacolod encouraged the HIM conference delegates to concentrate on training and certifying the local workforce for medical coding and billing. She said her company is open to partnerships with schools on how to create scholarships for trainees in coding and billing.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">After his Manila site, Butch Valenzuela, president of Visaya KPO, is eyeing Bacolod as an expansion site for health-related voice BPO jobs. Valenzuela said the local stakeholders must develop its talent supply to address the requirements of the HIM industry.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary Monchito Ibrahim, in his keynote address, commended BNEFIT and the local stakeholders for anticipating and preparing for the growth of the HIM industry. He said stressed there is a need to change mindset especially in the minds of young people about how the business process outsourcing industry is moving towards high skilled jobs.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">During the 2017 National Science and Technology Week, the new RxBox was presented on exhibit. HealthTech.PH has already featured the RxBox in its publications before and the new RxBox is proof of the success it has been in the public health sector.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The RxBox is the result of the cooperation between the National Telehealth Center, The DOST and UP Diliman. According to Dr. Portial Marcelo, director of the National Telehealth Center, the RxVBox can also function as a diagnostic tool since it can monitor the patient’s  heart rate, pulse rate, blood and blood oxygenation. The RxBox enables remote consultations between patients, community health workers, and urban based experts. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The RxBox is deployed in remote rural communities and communities that have a high poverty incidence. This is very important to the public health sector since statistics cite that 60% of Filipinos die without seeing doctors and professional medical practitioners. This is more evident in remote rural areas. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The Community Health Information Tracking System (CHITS) is now in its 14th year of operations in the country. CHITS is part of the National Telehealth System wherein medical services for the public are linked electronically. CHITS is part of that system as well as the RxBox.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">These systems enable the various health centers to be connected and can transmit needed information in the conduct of public health service.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The City of Pagadian has already improved its capacity in providing health care to its citizens. The city's four main health centers are all integrated with CHITS and it is the first city in the Zamboanga Peninsula to do so.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The training of its city health office staff has recently been concluded with regards to its electronic medical records system.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The University of the Philippines (UP) Manila – National Telehealth Center undertook the training of the city health office staff through the initiative of Pagadian City Mayor Romeo Pulmones and the City Health Officer, Dr. Noel Ceniza. The training and deployment of CHITS were undertaken in the districts of Sta. Lucia, San Pedro, Balingasan and San Jose, all of the has coverage on 54 barangays in the city.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The training was attended by 22 health workers last May 17 -19, 2017. Participants in the training were physicians, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, IT practitioners and even members of the sanitation department.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The training included subjects such as the importance of good quality data, practice of ethics in 3Health, Basic CHIT Modules that were composed of general consults, maternal care, lying-in, hygiene, family planning and even Philhealth reports.</span></div>
