The Philippine population is currently at 104 million. The population is said to be approaching its “Demographic Sweetspot” and that means the significant bulk is of the most productive age from 15 – 55 years old. That segment is also represented by the Millennials who comprise the majority of the demographic segment.<br />

One of the most basic needs is healthcare.<br />

Given the dynamics of social and cultural shifts, how will healthcare be made accessible to most of those who need it I that segment and for the Philippine population as a whole? It is acknowledged that current rules and regulations have been institutionalized way before these dynamics have occurred and that also goes for Healthcare Marketing and all its restrictions.<br />

The VITAL Healthcare Marketing Conference of 2018 aims to address this situation by developing an innovation mindset among all the stakeholders in this industry sector.<br />

This will entail advanced marketing and distribution systems together with platforms that are now emerging to meet these demands during fast-changing times. Integration with technology with patients, members, and providers of the healthcare community is now required.<br />

The VITAL Healthcare Marketing Conference 2018 aims to help companies and brands explore new models for innovation that will result in sustainable growth for the industry.<br />

The focus will be on creating meaningful connections between brands and patients/consumers via marketing communications, access due to distribution plans, also, opportunities with data technology that will assist in the designing new consumer solutions for healthcare. <br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The first successful kidney transplant in Bacolod City was undertaken at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) last August 25, 2017.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The successful operation was announced by CLMMRH Medical Center Head Dr. Julius Drilon. The transplant of the kidney to a 39 year old male recipient took 4 hours. The donor was a 42 year old female.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The operation was classified as a “subsidized” procedure since CLMMRH shouldered part of the patient’s medical expenses and that included medical and professional fees. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“For us, this first successful kidney transplant will have a lot of impact to the community because we want to prove that we are already capable and competent in doing serious medical operations,” Drilon said, adding that “it is part of the hospital's measures to address the general concerns of the community we serve.”</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Bacolod has at least 1,000 patients that are potential candidates for kidney transplants. Nationwide, only about 1,600 kidney transplants were undertaken compared to a waiting list of 40,000.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The cost of a kidney transplant in Manila ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 million per procedure. But in a state-operated hospital such as CLMMRH it was considered lesser in cost. The hospital is also applying for accreditation with the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) for the provision of Z Package benefits that will provide Php600,000 in subsidies for renal transplants according to Dr. Rose Marie Liquete, Executive Director of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI).</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The cost of the procedure is considered to be high due to the involvement of 2 patients, the donor, and the recipient, respectively. Anti-rejection medicine also adds to the cost of the procedure.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“Through a good donor recruitment program, we hope to line-up more patients availing our kidney transplant services soon,” he said. The CLMMRH, in the next couple of years, will also start conducting cardiovascular surgery, Drilon added.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Shortly thereafter, in 1972, the first electronic medical record system was developed by the Regenstrief Institute. Although this technology was the first of its kind, due to high costs, the systems were not initially attractive to physicians and used instead by government hospitals and visionary institutions. Into the 1990’s, personal computers were becoming more affordable and the Internet emerged. These innovations allowed for faster, easier access to information and the introduction of health information online – setting the stage for web-based EMR’s.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">In 1991, the Institute of Medicine made the case that by the year 2000, each physician’s office should be using computers in their practice in order to improve patient care. Although it was not turned into law, the Institute did provide a variety of recommendations to achieve that goal. As the emergence of EMR’s continued, there were also adjustments made to the rules and regulations surrounding privacy and confidentially of medical records. In 1996 the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was introduced in response to growing issues facing healthcare coverage, privacy and security in the United States. To follow disclosure and confidentiality regulations included in HIPPA, organizations have begun to shift to electronic systems to comply with these laws.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">With the emergence of web-based software in the early 2000’s the need for electronic medical record systems to be developed through remotely-hosted systems became evident. The ability to access information remotely or store on a remote-system, made the electronic method of keep records more appealing and ultimately more affordable for physicians to implement into their practice. During President George W. Bush’s time in the Oval Office, the budget for healthcare IT projects was doubled; a new sub-cabinet position of National Health Information Coordinator was created, as well as the call for an industry-wide adoption of electronic health record systems by 2014. This mandate has been supported by President Obama as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), a piece of legislation aimed at directing additional funding and incentives to healthcare professionals who adopt these electronic medical systems and follow the concept of “meaningful use” by the year 2014.</span></div>

Most residents and fellows reported feeling rushed and frustrated because of these documentation demands. They also reported that time spent on these tasks decreased their time available for teaching others and reduced the quality of their education. <span style="font-size: large;">A new hospital in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental is now on its full operation after a major reconstruction. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Department of Health (DOH), through its Health Facility Enhancement Program, has poured in almost P77 million worth of equipment and infrastructure to the Merceditas J. Montilla District Hospital located at Barangay Canturay in this southern Negros city.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The hospital is fully equipped with medical machines and equipment needed for the treatment and diagnosis of the public. “We are commending the provincial government for this project that will surely bring more quality health services to the people in Sipalay City and the nearby areas,” Health Assistant Secretary Enrique Tayag, who was the guest of honor at the hospital’s inauguration, said. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Since Sipalay city is now a rising tourist destination in the southern part of the Negros Island due to its beautiful coasts and islands, the hospital boosts the confidence of the people living in and coming to the city. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The P140-million two-storey infirmary, constructed starting 2011, is among the 11 provincial government-run hospitals in Negros Occidental.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The hospital now operates as a 75-bed capacity health institution and has 56 personnel, comprised of four doctors, 21 nurses, clerks, administrative staff, security guards, and utility workers.</span><br />
