Raul Destura of UP Manila’s National Institute of Health won the gold in the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland in its Invitational Conference.<br />
<br />
Knowing the urgency and scope of the problem of Dengue Fever infection in the country, Destura developed the Biotek-M Aqua Kit that utilizes polymerase reaction technology to detect the Dengue Fever virus in less than an hour. What makes it more accessible to Filipinos is that it is more affordable than conventional Dengue Fever diagnostic kits and systems.<br />

Destura received funding grants while conducting research and development for the diagnostic kit from the DOST Grants-in-Aid program, Philippine Council for Health Research and Development and Technicom.<br />

“I’m simply honored that our Filipino technology has been recognized by the international scientific community as relevant and important, and that it addresses a very common health need such as access to early diagnosis for dengue infection,” Destura told<br />
<br />
The Philippines sent two competitors in the competition and both won the gold medal for their inventions and this is out of 226 entries in the competition.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Dr. Dans was instrumental in evidence based medicine (EBM) that improved the practice of medicine and the delivery of quality healthcare in the Philippines. This efforts spearheaded the conduct of trainings on EBM with regards to the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines for healthcare workers and professional societies.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">MAKATI, Philippines - Health tech startup Medix.ph has called in advertising executive, Lloyd Tronco, to pick up COO duties as the company forges into new prospects in the latter half of 2016.<br /><br />Best known as the company which provides electronic medical records for dentists, Medix.PH goes beyond its comfort zone of serving only dentists by launching out into other medical practices.  <br /><br />Tronco, whose career started out in various brick-and-mortar businesses including outdoor advertising, signage and billboards, and later on being employed as a Media Strategist at McCann-Erickson Philippines, has taken on the duties for operations in Medix beginning the second half of June 2016.  This will be an interim role as Medix seeks for a permanent operations head.<br /><br />"Now is a really good time to step in and steer Medix through uncharted waters", said Tronco.  "There are a lot of similar tech companies who are also involved with electronic medical records and each one of us are finding our respective space within the health tech ecosystem.  What I bring to the table to complement Medix's foray into additional practices apart from dental is the insight of what doctors and medical professionals really want out of their EMR", continued Tronco.  In this endeavor, his previous experience as an ad professional comes in handy.<br /><br />Medix is known as the company which provides the electronic record keeping for expansive multi-dentist clinics such as Gan Advanced Osseointegation Center (GAOC).  Last year, Medix also engineered the IT backbone of Ayala Health's Family Doc brand of community clinics.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Since the inauguration of President Duterte, the wave of “surrenderees” has been astonishing. The  number has been tagged at 500,000 as of August 1, 2016. These “surrenderees” are composed of drug addicts and small time pushers coming from the destitute communities all over the country. They are depicted in numerous TV news, radio programs, and print matter.<br /><br />It is unprecedented as was pointed out as an indicator of success on the new administrations’ war on drugs. But the sheer number overwhelmed the services that is supposed to serve as the first base of managing the illegal drugs problem. The local health units of every LGU, already devolved from the national agencies found it difficult to cope with the unexpected deluge.<br /><br />The Department of Health (DOH) has already been preparing for such an eventuality since “D-Day” or the first day of the new administration. In coordination with other government agencies on how to manage the influx of the surrenderees.<br /><br />Last August 2, 2016, DOH-NCR initiated a 4-day program in training about 30 doctors from local government units (LGUs) with regards to determining and diagnosis of drug addicts. This will also be the basis on what kind of treatment will be applied upon referral to the DOH.<br /><br />Dr. Alfonso Villaroman of the DOH treatment and rehabilitation center based in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City cited the different levels of addiction during a health forum in Quezon City. The different levels will result in different treatment protocols ranging from counselling, out-patient rehabilitation or being admitted to a residential rehabilitation facility.<br /><br />Dr. VIllaroman explained the types and these are the following:<br /><br />1.    Experimental Users – those that tried using marijuana and then never used it again.<br />2.    Occasional Users – those that take drugs during parties and night outs with friends.<br />3.    Regular Users – those that imbibe on illegal drugs consistently (every 3 days, once a week or every 2 weeks).<br />4.    Compulsive Users – also diagnosed with co-morbid disorders or co-occurring diseases. The frequency of use will result in mental disorders (psychosis, paranoia), hypertension, cardio-pulmonary diseases and even infectious diseases such as HIV and TB made more likely because of the lifestyle. <br /><br />The participants of the training program will be able to assess the level of addiction and will recommend the correct response to each addiction.<br /><br />Levels 1 to 3 can be managed by counselling and out-patient programs while those level 3 and 4 will be managed by admission in rehabilitation centers. <br /><br />“Addiction is an illness. Not all illnesses are severe. It’s the same with addiction.” Said Dr. Villaroman.<br /><br />LGUs will also be provided a manual for community based drug treatment that was launched last year by the DOH and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime together with the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB).<br /><br />This training will also be given to social workers of the DSWD and will be adopted in other regions. This multi-pronged approach will be utilized to manage the “surrenderees” and is part of a broad spectrum strategy in fighting illegal drugs and drug addiction in the country. The “three pillars” of this approach will be “assess, diagnose and refer”. This will be undertaken with the cooperation of the DILG, DOH and DSWD. <br /><br />Dr. Villaroman said “Don’t be judgmental. They can be the best that they can be.”</span></div>

The 2016 Experts’ Convergence for Health Outcomes (ECHO) Summit was held for the Filipino physician, who serve as the frontliners in Philippine healthcare. <br /><br />“Our goal is to bring world class medical information to our Filipino doctors,” says Claire Papa of Unilab. Doctors in general practice, industrial medicine and internal medicine were invited  with the aim of getting the latest trends in serving the Filipinos who need healthcare<br /><br />The topics included were diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression and women’s health.  <br />The summit zeroes in on topics that are probably closest to our hearts: women’s health, anxiety and depression, diabetes and heart disease.<br /><br />Four world-renowned experts will tackle the four subjects mentioned above:<br /><br />1.    Dr. Wildred Fujimoto is a professor emeritus of Internal Medicine at the University of Washington , Seattle. Dr. Fujimoto is known for the Japanese American Community Diabetes Study. The Study concluded that Japanese Americans has a high incidence of Type 2 Diabetes. This was because of dietary factors wherein the subjects were consuming more of a typical American diet high on fat and simple sugars. “What we found out was the Japanese Americans living in Seattle were not eating more food than the Japanese living in Tokyo, both from the same urban environments, yet the Japanese Americans were heavier,” Dr. Fujimoto disclosed. “What was different was that they were consuming more of the calories as fat, especially animal fat, while the Japanese in Tokyo were consuming more of the calories as complex carbohydrates, not simple sugars. The second thing was the Japanese Americans’ lifestyle included less physical activity than that of the Japanese in Tokyo who have to commute to work, walk to the train station, go up and down the subway, walk off the train. Whereas in the US, people drive their cars and park as close as possible to the nearest elevator.”<br /><br />2.    Dr. Seyyed Nassir Ghaemi is a professor at Tufts University Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Ghaemi sifts through the evidence for treatment of depressive or anxiety symptoms in persons at risk of cardiovascular disease, including the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and lithium. Dr. Ghaemi discussed that Dr. Ghaemi shares, “Among the regions of the world, the region with the highest global burden of depression is Africa, followed by the Middle East and Europe — depression seems to correlate with socio-economic conflict and poverty. Asia would be in between the Middle East and Europe. In China, the experience of depression is much more physical than psychological. They say, ‘I have a headache’ or ‘My stomach hurts.’”<br /><br />It is a problem that is quite common but is also overlooked by most doctors. It is caused by depression and anxiety it disclosed. <br />3.    Dr. Bertram Pitt of the University of Michigan School of Medicine has generated over 500 articles that have been peer reviewed in medical journals. Dr. Pitt presented the latest trends in mineralcoticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) in heart failure management. The drug agent is used in the management of hyperkalemia which in extremely high  levels of potassium in the blood leads to cardiac arrest and death.<br /><br />4.    On Women’s Health, Dr. Amos Pines from Tel-Aviv discussed the potential of hormone therapy replacement in reducing coronary heart disease among women. Also tackled was the potential side effects of HRT such as cancer. <span style="font-size: large;">BACOLOD, Philippines -  Behind a ninety year old facade, a modern hospital awaits to serve patients of the newly formed Negros Island Region.  The Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH), formerly called the Occidental Negros Provincial Hospital (ONPH), is one of the oldest operational hospitals in the country.  Founded on March 24, 1926 with a 25-bed capacity, it is located at Lacson-Burgos Streets, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Being a structure more than fifty years old, the CLMMRH is not only a hospital but a national heritage site.  On May 30, 2012, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines installed the historical marker at the CLMMRH Heritage Building, declaring it as a building of cultural heritage because of its strong American architecture.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Today, the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) in Bacolod City can now cater to more patients, as it opened on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, the West Tower Building, a health infrastructure with facilities amounting to more than P1 billion.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">With this development, the CLMMRH, the only hospital in Negros Island Region run by the Department of Health, is positioned to improve the quality of health services and provide higher tertiary care to its clients.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Dr. Julius Drilon, medical center chief, who led the blessing and inauguration rites of the building last April 13, said the opening of the newest facility marks another step for the regional hospital in bringing a higher level of patient care.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Drilon said the new facilities enable CLMMRH, an International Standardization Organization (ISO)-certified government-run hospital, to provide compassionate health services that are accessible and world-class, yet affordable.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The facility is open to patients of all economic status for direct admissions, he said.</span><br />

Insurance Corp. program and the hospital’s no-billing policy.<br /><br />The
 P436-million six-storey West Tower Building, with a floor area of 5,460
 square meters, can accommodate additional 163 in-patient beds.<br /><br />The
 infrastructure is coupled with P572 million worth of state-of-the-art 
medical and non-medical equipment, including high definition endoscopy 
system, mobile X-ray, mammography system, pneumatic tube, ultrasound 
machine, patient monitors with central station and accessories, 
anesthesia machine ventilators, and operating tables with room lights, 
monitors, and video management system, among others.<br /><br />The hospital will also start its kidney transplant services by mid 2016.<br /><br />Undoubtedly, the CLMMRH is the most modern and well equipped Regional Hospital in the country today.<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">*video by Square Productions</span></span><br />
