Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or use insulin effectively to control blood sugar (glucose) levels. Although glucose is an important source of energy for the body’s cells, too much glucose in the blood for a long time can cause damage in many parts of the body, including the heart, kidneys, blood vessels and the small blood vessels in the eyes. 
 
When the blood vessels in the eye’s retina (the light sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye) swell, leak or close off completely — or if abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina — it is called Diabetic Retinopathy. 
 
 
You may not know your eyes are harmed until the problem is very bad. Your doctor can catch problems early if you get regular eye exams. This is very important. The early stages of diabetic retinopathy don't cause changes in vision and you won't have symptoms. Only an eye exam can detect the problem, so that steps can be taken to prevent the retinopathy from getting worse. 
 
Even if the doctor who takes care of your diabetes checks your eyes, you need an eye exam every 1 to 2 years by an eye doctor who takes care of people with diabetes. An eye doctor has equipment that can check the back of your eye much better than your regular doctor can. If you have eye problems because of diabetes, you will probably see your eye doctor more often. You may need special treatment to prevent your eye problems from getting worse. 
 
The doctor will check your vision using a chart of random letters of different sizes. This is called the Snellen chart. You will then be given eye drops to widen (dilate) the pupils of your eyes so that the doctor can better see the back of the eye. You may feel stinging when the drops are first placed. You may have a metallic taste in your mouth. To see the back of your eye, the doctor looks through a special magnifying glass using a bright light.  
 
However, even without Retinopathy, Something to remember: diabetes can cause vision in your eyes to change. If your blood sugar levels change quickly, it can affect the shape of your eye’s lens, causing blurry vision, which goes back to normal after your blood sugar stabilizes.

Have you ever heard of "Artificial Eyes" or medically called, "Ocular Prosthesis"?  
 
Implanting a prosthetic eye (ocular prosthesis) is almost always recommended after an eye is surgically removed due to damage or disease. This implant supports proper eyelid functioning. The need for this may follow after an injury, glaucoma, eye infections and eye tumors.  
 
What is this exactly? An ocular prosthesis, artificial eye or glass eye is a type of craniofacial prosthesis that replaces an absent natural eye following an enucleation, evisceration, or orbital exenteration. The prosthesis fits over an orbital implant and under the eyelids. Though often referred to as a glass eye, the ocular prosthesis roughly takes the shape of a convex shell and is made of medical grade plastic acrylic. 
 
Artificial eye-making has been practiced since ancient times.  The first ocular prostheses were made by Roman and Egyptian priests as early as the fifth century BC.  In those days artificial eyes were made of painted clay attached to cloth and worn outside the socket. 
 
It took about twenty centuries for the first in-socket artificial eyes to be developed.  At first, these were made of gold with colored enamel.  Then, in the latter part of the sixteenth century, the Venetians started making artificial eyes out of glass.  These early glass eyes were crude, uncomfortable to wear, and very fragile.  Even so, the Venetians continued making them and kept their methods secret until the end of the eighteenth century. 
 
 
After that, the center for artificial eye-making shifted to Paris for a time, but by the mid-nineteenth century, German glass blowers had developed superior techniques, and the center for glass eye-making moved to Germany.  Shortly thereafter, glass eye-making was introduced in the United States. 
 
Presently, ocularists and eye surgeons have always worked together to make artificial eyes look more realistic. For decades, all efforts and investments to improve the appearance of artificial eyes have been dampened by the immobility of the pupil. One solution to this problem has been demonstrated recently in a device based on an LCD which simulates the pupil size as a function of the ambient light. 
 
he process of making an ocular prosthesis, or a custom eye, will begin, usually six weeks after the surgical procedure, and it typically will take up to three visits before the final fitting of the prosthesis. In most cases, the patient will be fitted during the first visit, return for the hand-painting of the prosthesis, and finally come back for the final fitting. The methods used to fit, shape, and paint the prosthesis often vary between ocularist and patient needs. 
 
The care required for an ocular prosthesis, outside of regular polishes and check-ups with ocularists, typically revolves around maintaining moisture of the prosthesis and cleanliness. Removing the ocular prosthesis for cleaning outside of the ocularist's office is not required, but some patients prefer it. Patients find that after they've adjusted to their ocular prosthesis, they barely notice a difference in feeling between their artificial eye and their real eye.

Currently, there are more than 125 millions people worldwide who are using contact lens regularly. What they may not know is that wearing contact lenses put you at risk of several serious conditions from self limiting to sight threatening diseases such eye infections and corneal ulcers. Our eye normally fights infections through a variety of defense mechanisms. Our tears are anti-bacterial in nature and blinking helps to wash off bacterial organisms or any foreign bodies from the surface of the eye. 
 
However, when you wear contact lenses, the effectiveness of both functions are inhibited. Thus, bacteria, fungus and parasite can bind to the surface of the contact lens that sits against the eye. If those organisms infect the corneal surface they can destroy the delicate corneal cells, which can lead to scarring and vision loss. 
 
To make matter worse there is a huge influx of cosmetic lens (decorative lens) wearers today. These lens are gaining great popularity among movie and music fanatics, inspired by stars like Lady Gaga and films like Twilight. Cosmetic lenses are sold everywhere, legally and illegally. These lenses carry the same or even higher set of dangers than a typical contact lenses as people tend to handle them less appropriately. Poor methods of usage include sharing the lenses, wearing ones that are either too big or hard and some even dyed their own cosmetic lenses! 
 
he risks associated with contact lens wear are the same for all types of contact lenses (eg, rigid, soft, extended wear, daily wear) that are worn. Wearing contact lenses increases the risk for several serious conditions, including eye infections and corneal ulcers. These conditions can develop quickly; in rare cases, they can even result in blindness. The degree of risk is different for daily wear vs extended/overnight wear, as well as for different types of lens materials. 
 
Risk is defined by the most serious adverse event that can occur, which in the case of contact lenses is microbial keratitis. A prospective study was conducted to determine the incidence of contact lens-related microbial keratitis in Australia. The study evaluated the incidence of microbial keratitis, as well as the rates of microbial keratitis among various modes of contact lens wear (daily wear, daily disposable, and extended wear) and types of contact lens materials (conventional hydrogel, silicone hydrogel, and gas permeable). The investigators reported on 151 cases of contact lens-related microbial keratitis; of the ophthalmic practitioners who participated in this study, 81% responded. The rates obtained were based on a denominator of 10,000 contact lens wearers. 
 
Vision loss from microbial keratitis may be permanent. It all depends on when the diagnosis is made. If it is caught early and diagnosed properly followed by treatment, there may be no ulceration or scarring. (The scarring that develops from the corneal ulcer can cause permanent vision loss.) If the ulcer is centrally located in the cornea, permanent vision loss may occur, depending on how deep and invasive the ulcer is.

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, the cable that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Damage to the optic nerve from glaucoma can result in vision loss and blindness. 
 
Treatments that lower the pressure in the eye both lower the risk of developing the optic nerve damage that defines glaucoma, and the risk of pre-existing damage getting worse. 
 
 
Despite the treatments available for lowering eye pressure, such as eye drop medication, laser treatment, and operating room surgery, there are some individuals for whom these treatments either do not sufficiently lower the eye pressure, or cause unacceptable side effects. In these situations, both glaucoma patient and physician look for alternative therapies. 
 
One of the commonly discussed alternatives for the treatment of glaucoma by lowering IOP is the smoking of marijuana. 
 
The idea that marijuana can be helpful in treating glaucoma dates to the 1970s. Studies conducted then showed that smoking marijuana lowered the IOP of people with glaucoma. As a result of this research, additional studies were conducted examining whether marijuana or its active ingredient, a compound known as THC, could be used to keep IOP lowered. This research was supported by the National Eye Institute, a division of the federal National Institutes of Health. 
 
The research found that when marijuana is smoked or when a form of its active ingredient is taken as a pill or by injection, it does lower IOP. However, it only lowers IOP for a short period of time—about three or four hours. 
 
 
This short period of time is a major drawback for the use of marijuana as a glaucoma treatment. Because glaucoma needs to be treated 24 hours a day, you would need to smoke marijuana six to eight times a day around the clock to receive the benefit of a consistently lowered IOP. Because of marijuana's mood-altering effect, smoking so much of it daily would leave you too impaired to drive, operate equipment or function at the peak of your mental ability. 
 
Scientists are still exploring whether the active ingredients in marijuana may yet offer a glaucoma treatment. However, such developments require much more research and are many years from becoming a reality.
