<span style="font-size: large;">Meditating is the perfect refresh. It splits up a long day, lowers stress and tension that can build up and can also remind you to appreciate the present moment. When the 2 pm slump approaches or we’ve hit a mental block; taking ten minutes away to meditate is a great way to reset. The obstacle is finding a quiet space to practice independently, without being disturbed (a toilet cubicle works well if there are no alternatives). If you have headphones, another way to support your practice is through a guided meditation app (popular choices are Headspace or Calm).</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Dubbed as The Apple Heart Study app, the extremely helpful feature will be able to detect irregularities and send notifications to watch owners who may be unknowingly suffering from atrial fibrillation (AFib).</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The medical initiative was first launched last September as part of the watchOS 4, The Verge reports.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">In partnership with experts from Stanford University, Apple hopes to collect heart rate data, which could further aid patients, doctors, and researchers to detect and cure heart irregularities.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">“Working alongside the medical community, not only can we inform people of certain health conditions, we also hope to advance discoveries in heart science,” Apple’s chief operating officer, Jeff Williams, said in a statement.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Heart rate is measured by green LED lights flashing hundreds of times per second, as well as photodiodes, which monitor the amount of blood flowing through the wrists.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Moreover, Apple Watch users who took part in the survey will be notified through their devices if an irregular heartbeat is detected.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Those who will be flagged will also receive free consultation with a study doctor and an electrocardiogram (EKG) patch for further observation.</span><br />

Together with undergraduate Matt Morgan and instructors and professors in biomedical engineering  Carl Herickhoff and Jeremy Dahl both of whom have since moved to Stanford University, the device is still being developed further. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The chip, the size of a fingernail is attached to an ultrasound probe and is connected to a laptop that has been inputted with a developed program for the device. In a matter of seconds, a 3D model is generated. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The device which is a standard ultrasound probe has the chip attached to it and is used in its regular way to generate the 3D image.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The prototypes were created at Duke University’s 3D printing laboratory. The next step is or trials to determine how best to use the device in patient care. Also, development is going further in enabling the device to adapt to other 3D imaging machines.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">The device has good potential in generating 3D images where MRI and CT Scan devices are not available such as rural areas and in developing countries.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">BIGMO, a complementary food for children developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to lead the effort to alleviate child malnutrition in Valenzuela City.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) established a facility in Valenzuela City that will produce the said complementary food for Valenzuela City’s children who are aged 5 years and below.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The automated food production facility will be located at the Valenzuela City Polytechnic College (ValPoly).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The inauguration of the facility was led by DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Pena. The DOST’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute developed BIGMO that comes in 3 forms. BIGMO Curls, BIGMO ready-to-cook baby food, and BIGMO Instant Blend. This complementary food is aimed at addressing child malnutrition in Valenzuela City.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Valenzuela City May Rexlon T. Gatchalian welcomed the DOST facility and it will dovetail with the city’s current barangay-based feeding program.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Although there are 4 other food production facilities in the country, The facility in Valenzuela is the first facility to be fully automated. This feature minimizes human contamination due to handling. The facility is also centrally controlled.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The facility can process 120 kg of rice or mung beans per hour and that is 30 grams per sachet of BIGMO. Also, it is capable of processing rice and mung beans of up to 180 kg which can finish a daily production in two hours.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Various offices of DOST such as the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, Metals Industry Research and Development Institute, and the DOST-NCR– worked hand-in-hand with the Valenzuela City LGU, ValPoly, and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce Valenzuela Chapter. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">It is acknowledged that the public healthcare system in the rural areas of the country does not meet the need of the said population sector. The rural population accounts for 60% of the entire population of the country.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Local health governance is now being given the attention it has been needing. Using technology not available 10 years ago, access to quality health-related data by local health professionals, the local chief executives in the rural LGUs and policy makers will benefit from WAH. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The Wireless Access for Health Initiative (WAH) is a result of a public-private partnership that goes back to the year 2009.  Currently, the WAH Initiative is partnered with over 100 Local Government Units (LGUs) and is involved in assisting the LGUs to improve and manage their local health units with the use of the WAH Digital Platform.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">WAH consolidates process management innovations, wireless, mobile, and digital communications technologies that result in a clinic-centered health information platform that is used in Rural Health Units (RHUs) by health workers and professionals.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">WAH is used to collate, store and transmit information from the RGHUs to their LGU Health Office and Provincial Health Office. The information and data is critical in the decision-making process of their LGUs and Provincial governments.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Aside from transmittal and storage of data, WAH is able to generate reports that are compliant with the format of the Department of Health (DOH).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This enables the decision makers to have accurate data for analyzing, evaluating and determining the healthcare requirements of their constituencies.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Patient records are easily retrieved by healthcare professionals thus this speeds up the process of checking up and visiting patients resulting in more patients getting care.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Currently, the system has grown to 106 clinics in 65 municipalities, 4 cities, and 24 provinces across the Philippines six of which are Geographically  Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA). </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Using laptops, PDAs and Tablets, the WAH system is used in the collation of data, organizing data and even analysis. Patients are also given access to information, provides health and wellness related education.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The WAH Initiative recently won 3rd Place in the HealthTech Challenge competition held at the Asian Institute Of Management and was organized by the Swiss Embassy and the AIM in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Switzerland.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">University of the Philippines (UP) president Danilo Concepcion has bared plans to establish a medical complex in Quezon City that will feature a medical school, a second Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and a cancer research institute. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">During his investiture speech on Wednesday, Concepcion confirmed plans to establish a second PGH at the university’s flagship campus in Diliman, Quezon City. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">He said the PGH will be part of the medical complex that will also include a college of medicine and the Genomic Cancer Research Institute. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“This medical complex will serve the UP Diliman community and the north of Metro Manila. On the one hand, the College of Medicine will result in a substantial increase in the number of medical students we shall train to increase the number of doctors in our country,” Concepcion said. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“The Genomic Cancer Research Institute will focus on finding cures for cancer, using the science of genomics as a major tool,” he added. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The UP president said they conceive PGH-Diliman to be the most modern and well-equipped hospital in the country. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“We believe that we can make this dream happen with your support and the help of our national and local governments,” he said. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The plan for the medical complex, including sources of funds, has yet to be finalized.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">In his speech, Concepcion also bared other plans, including support for faculty, staff, and students. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">He also stressed the need to rehabilitate buildings in different campuses of the university. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“It entails the repair, restoration, and improvement of our buildings and dormitories. The time has come to put an end to the not-so-amusing joke that there is no clean or decent toilet in UP,” he said.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Return service</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Concepcion also raised the possibility of implementing a return-service program for graduates, especially in light of the implementation of the free college tuition policy. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“This return service will be for one year after graduation. Our graduates will be required to teach senior high school students in public high schools that we will identify as UP feeder schools. This scheme, we hope, will uplift the quality of the graduates from these feeder schools,” he said. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“The return-service condition, however, will be voluntary. Any student may opt out from this condition before graduation by paying his tuition, or the cost of his education if he will opt out after graduation. The return service to be rendered by our graduates will not be for free. Our students who will decide to teach will be compensated properly,” he added. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Concepcion said they are very optimistic that the students will choose to render return service.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">There are 8 babies that are born deaf every day in the Philippines according to a 2014 Census by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). 50% of cases of hearing loss are preventable, 32% due to cases of Rubella and 18% are caused by meningitis, infection, otitis media and ototoxicity. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">8 to 40% of schoolchildren have some form of hearing loss and this is a real public health concern. The cost from Specialized Education, Specialized Care and loss of potential income during adulthood can be quantified at Php4.3 million pesos per child with deafness.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">There is already a law, Republic Act 9709 that provides for Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (NHS), but less than 10% of babies are screened every year.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Hearing for Life Project presents a solution that aims to address these problems. Increasing the rates of newborn screening utilizing Novel Technologies and Telehealth also known as HeLe is a collaboration by experts from institutions, biomedical device development, and eLearning both from the Philippines and California, USA.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The HeLe Project objectives are to develop the following:</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">1.<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Cost Effective hearing screening with telehealth capability for deployment in primary health care facilities and centers in the country.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">2.<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Computer based training for health workers in remote and rural communities.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">3.<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Telereferral system that connects the primary healthcare providers with specialists that will provide diagnostics and even hearing intervention services. This will enable the continuity of hearing care for Filipinos.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This will build the capacities of primary health care centers in screening and proper treatment of Filipinos with hearing problems, especially children</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The HeLe projects is a collaboration between the Philippine National Ear Institute, University of California-Berkeley, UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute and the University of California-Davis and the UP National Telehealth Center.  </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">In 2014, the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (BNEFIT) has set the goal to achieve at least 60,000 jobs in the ICT industry by 2022, including HIM jobs.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The 1st Bacolod Healthcare Information Management (HIM) Conference held last August 17 and 18, 2017  at SMX Convention Center – Bacolod successfully gathered local stakeholders to scale up the potential of the countryside in attracting HIM jobs, opportunities and investments, and bring everyone on the same page in the area of HIM education and training. The first day saw more than 300 students while the second day gathered leaders and executives from colleges universities and training institutions, medical and healthcare and IT companies, national and local government executives, real estate developers and other private-sector stakeholders. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Maraňon, Jr. in his speech said the province is “at the threshold of a new beginning to expand and conquer another industry – the healthcare information management.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Our joint target with BNEFIT for Bacolod and Negros Occidental is to successfully expand to three areas - software development, a creative process like game development and animation and in healthcare information management, Maraňon said.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">BNEFIT Executive Director Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said of this target, 5,000 are targeted to be from the HIM sector which covers the whole spectrum of health services that require voice, non-voice, data analytics and information management such as medical coding and billing, and medical transcription, among others. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The Healthcare Information Management of the Philippines (HIMAP) Director Raymond Ang said the healthcare BPO market is projected to reach US$ 276.79 Billion by 2021 from US$170.47 Billion in 2016, growing at a CAGR of 10.2% during the forecast period from 2016 to 2021. In the Philippines, as of 2016, there are 118,000 workers in HIM and we the projected annual growth rate of 10 percent, the industry forecast is 210,000 jobs by 2022, Ang in his presentation said.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Judilyn Caňete, president of MedStar Philippines Healthcare Information Management, a New York based company which recently expanded to Bacolod encouraged the HIM conference delegates to concentrate on training and certifying the local workforce for medical coding and billing. She said her company is open to partnerships with schools on how to create scholarships for trainees in coding and billing.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">After his Manila site, Butch Valenzuela, president of Visaya KPO, is eyeing Bacolod as an expansion site for health-related voice BPO jobs. Valenzuela said the local stakeholders must develop its talent supply to address the requirements of the HIM industry.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary Monchito Ibrahim, in his keynote address, commended BNEFIT and the local stakeholders for anticipating and preparing for the growth of the HIM industry. He said stressed there is a need to change mindset especially in the minds of young people about how the business process outsourcing industry is moving towards high skilled jobs.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The two-day event was organized by BNEFIT to explore potential synergies in creating innovative platforms for delivering global HIM services, discover the magic of HIM education to create jobs and investments for countryside development and create a conducive ecosystem for HIM jobs and investments.</span><br />
