Several hospitals have begun deploying T2’s Candida-detection system, which is based on the same physical principle behind magnetic resonance imaging. By the end of this year the company aims to have 30 hospitals signed on to purchase and use the technology.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Sepsis is a destructive reaction to an infection marked by an overwhelming inflammatory response throughout the body. If left untreated, sepsis can cause organ malfunction and death. Treating a septic patient requires pinpointing the bacterial or fungal organism that is the root cause. Today that process takes at least a day, and can take up to five days, as the patient’s condition worsens. T2 Biosystems says its novel pathogen detector, called T2 Magnetic Resonance (T2MR), can identify the bug within five hours.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Doctors typically give a septic patient an immediate dose of a so-called broad-spectrum antibiotic that kills a variety of different bacteria, and then try to figure out the specific bug at fault by drawing blood and performing a lab test called a blood culture. At that point it is a race against the unidentified pathogen, and the blood culture step, which often doesn’t work, simply takes too long, says T2 Biosystems CEO John McDonough. McDonough cites clinical data that implies that if patients can get the right drug within 12 hours of first showing symptoms, the chance of death can be cut in half. “Every hour of delayed therapy increases mortality by 7 to 8 percent,” he says.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Broad-spectrum antibiotics often don’t work, and are useless against fungal sepsis, which is even more deadly than bacterial sepsis. Candida infections in the bloodstream kill some 40 percent of patients.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">“We have the only technology we’re aware of that can go directly from a blood sample to a species-specific diagnostic test result,” says McDonough. It’s also more accurate than a blood culture. In a recent head-to-head comparison involving 55 patients known to have Candida infections, T2MR detected the pathogen in 96 percent of the patients, whereas blood culture detected it in only 60 percent. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The T2MR detector works by measuring changes in the magnetic properties of the water molecules in the sample. After some processing steps, magnetic nanoparticles, equipped on their surface with strands of DNA complementary to strands in the target pathogen, are mixed with the sample. If a given target is present, the particles will attach to it and cluster, causing changes in the magnetic properties of the water molecules in the sample. Applying magnetic pulses elicits a response from those molecules, called T2 relaxation, and by measuring the change in this signal, the device automatically determines whether or not a given bug is present. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Six hospitals have begun using the Candida diagnostic test, and 13 more have signed contracts to adopt the technology. Next in the pipeline is a bacteria detector aimed at the bugs not covered by broad-spectrum antibiotics. The company expects to begin testing the bacteria detector in clinical trials by the end of this year. If it can get FDA-approval for this test as quickly as it did for the Candida test, the bacteria diagnostic could be in the market as early as 2017.</span></div>

Last week, Intuitive released a fancy new version of the da Vinci robot, the Xi, which it says has more capabilities than previous models and is optimized for complex procedures.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">A quick reminder if you're not familiar with the da Vinci: It's not an automated surgical system. Rather, it's remote controlled by a human surgeon. The word "remote" might be a bit misleading, though: while the system is capable of being operated from just about anywhere, it's most common to have the surgeon sitting right next to it, in the operating room with the patient. The benefit of the da Vinci system isn't really the potential for remote access; instead, it's that the surgeon can use tiny robotic tools that mean a much smaller incision, along with visual enhancements like infrared imaging that provide valuable information than their eyes might not.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">That last bit in there is a good example of one of the benefits of using a robot for surgery: you can add a bit of augmented reality into the mix to make the job of the surgeon significantly easier by providing information overlaid on the important bits of the patient directly, instead of having to glance back and forth at images while you try not to poke the wrong squishy thing.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Still, we should point out that the benefits of robotic assisted surgeries are still open to debate: they are minimally invasive, but the systems are expensive, making the surgeries more expensive, and the overall benefit to the patient is not always certain.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">However, a UCLA study from February of this year did find that "prostate cancer patients who undergo robotic-assisted prostate surgery have fewer instances of cancer cells at the edge of their surgical specimen and less need for additional cancer treatments like hormone or radiation therapy than patients who have traditional 'open' surgery."</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Dental braces and retainers are used for corrective interventions with regards to uneven teeth or gaps between teeth. The dental braces are custom made for each patient and is the result of careful and scientific measurements that will be worn for a prescribed period of time and subject to adjustments within said period.</span></div>

Buendia disclosed that these illegal practitioners have already begun to be prevalent and that the repercussions of such dental devices have taken their toll on unknowing Filipinos. Cases of gum diseases, tooth loss and even hepatitis have been reported due to these unlicensed practitioners. A raid conducted in Pangasinan province resulted in the arrest of a pedicab driver who pretended to be a dentist. Seized were instruments for the manufacture of dental devices.</span></div>

Growing transplantable hearts in a laboratory has been a long-standing dream within the medical community, and a study in the journal Circulation Research has moved it one step closer to reality: A team of researchers have successfully grown a beating human heart in the laboratory using stem cells.</span></div>

After causing the stem cells to develop into two types of cardiac cells, the researchers then mimicked the environment a human heart would typically grow within and infused the cardiac cells with a nutrient solution that facilitated growth.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Estrada led the blessing and inauguration of the new P36-million, 16-slice Somatom CT scan machine, the latest addition to the long list of brand new medical equipment he has  purchased to upgrade  the six public hospitals of the city.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">“Nowhere in Metro Manila can you see sophisticated medical equipment in a public hospital like we have here. And Manileños can use this for free,” Estrada said.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Estrada said he understands the predicament of poor patients when availing expensive but needed medical tests and procedures such as CT scan.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">GABMMC is a 150-200 bed capacity district hospital in Delpan Street, Tondo. Constructed in 1998, it provides high quality specialized health services and was recently renovated and re-equipped by the city government.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Dr. Roy Vizcarra, head of the Radiology Department of GABMMC, said the new 16-slice CT scan machine will replace the old two-slice machine they have been using for years. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The 16-slice CT scan machine, according to Vizcarra, is more accurate and faster in producing 3D images, enabling doctors to detect a patient’s illness at an early stage and with more clarity.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The machine can detect diseases such as aneurysm, appendicitis, liver tumor, lung, liver, and pancreatic cancers; kidney stones and tuberculosis and other infections, among others, and can also be used in “staging” almost all types of cancers.</span><br />

They report in a new study that by encapsulating padimate O, the sunscreen enhances UV protection, while preventing epidermal cellular exposure to chemical UV filters and the health concerns associated with their direct cellular exposure.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The bioadhesive nanoparticles, according to the study’s abstract, are “readily suspended in water, facilitate adherence to the stratum corneum without subsequent intra-epidermal or follicular penetration, and their interaction with skin is water resistant, yet the particles can be removed via active towel drying.”</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Most commercial chemical sunblocks, according to a Yale press release on the study, can penetrate the skin and go into the bloodstream, possibly causing hormonal side effects and promoting skin cancer.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">"Almost all of the organic sunblock molecules are not chemicals we want penetrating into the skin, or into the bloodstream. Many of these are aromatic compounds that can very effectively absorb UV energy, but concerns have been raised regarding their potential to act as allergens, to release oxidative species after UV exposure and to partially bind to hormone receptors,” study coauthor Michael Girardi, M.D., professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School told Dermatology Times. “The advantages of using chemical sunblock to protect against UV damage nonetheless outweigh the risks. Our goal with the nanoparticle formulation strategy is simply to further increase the benefit-to-risk ratio."</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">“Nanoparticles are large enough to keep from going through the skin’s surface, and our nanoparticles are so adhesive that they don’t even go into hair follicles, which are relatively open,” Dr. Saltzman said.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Since its arrival, the 3T MRI scanner has been put to good use in clinical work – with nearly 500 clinical cases using the machine. Dr Tang Phua Hwee, Consultant, Department of Diagnostic & Interventional Imaging, KKH, explains that the use of the machine is able to spare little ones invasive diagnostic procedures, shorten the diagnostic process and contribute to cost-effective healthcare. “Clinicians are increasingly reliant on imaging as there is a desire to diagnose diseases earlier when they may be more amenable to treatment. Surgeons also find a map of the territory useful prior to carrying out an operation.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Due to the non-invasive nature of bioimaging procedures, the 3T MRI machine also opens up tremendous opportunities in the area of research and clinical studies, particularly in the area of paediatric MRI research. In the infant brain, myelination of the axons is incomplete, causing poor contrast in the image between grey and white matter – delivering a blurry photograph of the brain. Prof Sir George Radda, Chairman, Biomedical Research Council, A*STAR, is hopeful that the 3T MRI machine will facilitate studies in the paediatric brain – particularly in premature babies – and also women’s pain and breast cancer research.</span></div>
