<span style="font-size: large;">There are three main methods of treating angina (when the coronary artery narrows) and heart attack (when the coronary artery is blocked): drug therapy, coronary artery catheterization or coronary artery bypass. A coronary artery bypass is performed in cases where attacks cannot be controlled by drugs, constriction in the coronary artery is difficult to reach with catheterization, there are risks associated with catheterization, or there is narrowing in more than one location. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Another blood vessel is used as a graft to create a detour, or bypass, to restore blood circulation to normal. It used to be standard procedure to temporarily stop the heart and use a heart-lung machine, essentially a pump, to artificially perform the functions of the heart and lungs to circulate blood throughout the body while performing the bypass. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">However, in Japan 70% of these operations are now performed using the so-called off-pump method, which is performed with the heart still beating, using an instrument called a stabilizer to inhibit vibrations in the sections being sutured. The greatest merit of this procedure is that the physical strain on the patient’s heart and body is greatly reduced, leading to a faster postoperative recovery. Although heart-lung machines are extremely safe, it cannot be denied that stopping the heart and putting a patient into a state of suspended animation for a long period inflicts damage on their body.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">It was a regular afternoon and we were in 1st Grade. Suddenly, we were told that classes would be suspended and that we should line up outside our classrooms. We saw that all lines got connected and led to the school clinic. Those who went out had tears in their eyes, holding their upper right arms and could not tell us what happened. It turned out that we will be given vaccinations. I tried telling the nurse that I had shots already since me and my sisters were brought several times to the hospital and had injections on our butts. The nurse would hear none of it and they broke out this vial and needle and proceeded to scratch the skin of my upper arm. It hurt and something like broken glass with a clear liquid was applied to it. After that we were sent home and I showed it to my mother. She just said “Ay, na-bakunahan ka na”. That was the first time I ever heard of it, “bakuna” I mean. In a few hours the skin around it turned red and it had this steady throbbing pain. The next day, there were classmates who did not go to school. I myself was running a low grade fever but still managed to attend school and play a little after it. In the next few days, the  main game was punching the upper arm of a classmate (it was an all-boys school). Some even had swelling and the wound would be surrounded by pus. But we all endured and in a week it was this round scar on the right arm and another scar on the left arm but the wound in the left arm was not as prominent and quickly dried up.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">From a surgical perspective, advances in cataract treatment have improved the way ophthalmologists deal with this condition in the past two decades. We have seen how the merger of technology and surgical ingenuity contributed to making cataract surgery the modern-day miracle that it is today. Currently, we can remove the cataract through a very small (2-3mm) incision in the eyeball using fine surgical blades and implant a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) that restores full functional vision in patients after surgery. This is called “Phacoemulsification”, presently the standard in cataract practice worldwide. Unfortunately, this procedure has often been mistakenly referred to as “laser eye surgery”—which it is NOT. It is more appropriate to call this procedure “small-incision cataract surgery”, “sutureless cataract surgery”, or “no-stitch cataract surgery” for the layman. True laser-assisted cataract surgery has never been available to patients until today—with the introduction of the Alcon LenSx femtosecond laser surgery.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The Alcon LenSX femtosecond laser differs from the traditional methods of cataract surgery by the absence of the blade. By using very short yet intense bursts of near-infrared light, the Alcon LenSX femtosecond laser technology is able to create extremely precise subsurface cuts without manual intervention The blades used to create the small incisions in the eye have been completely replaced by this laser, making the incisions more precise and predictable. In addition, the circular opening that is created in the human lens in order to access the cataract (called a capsulotomy) which was traditionally performed by human hands has now been replaced by the femtosecond laser, making the capsulotomies more architecturally round and centered. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Studies have shown that this is very important in intraocular lens stability and refractive predictability of surgical outcomes (In one study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, femtosecond laser incisions achieved perfect capsulotomy diameter accuracy in 100 percent of cases). Finally, the actual cataract is also fragmented by the femtosecond laser making it much easier and less traumatic for the surgeon to remove and clean it up prior to placement of the IOL. In short, the femtosecond laser has replaced many of the steps in the cataract surgery that were previously performed by human hands, i.e., resulting in less surgical error and better predictability of outcomes. Results are more precise than any other previous or current methods of cataract surgery.</span></div>

Dr. John Moriarty gave his patient a choice. Dunlap could have open-heart surgery or undergo a new minimally invasive procedure using a device called AngioVac to vacuum the massive clot out of his heart. The catch? The procedure had never been successfully performed in California.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">A new grandfather, Dunlap didn't hesitate to choose the second option and underwent the procedure on Aug. 14. A week later, he was home, full of energy and eager to play on the floor with his 9-month-old grandson.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Here's how it worked: A team of UCLA interventional radiologists and cardiovascular surgeons slid a tiny camera down Dunlap's esophagus to visually monitor his heart. Next, they guided a coiled hose through his neck artery and plugged one end into his heart, against the clot. They threaded the other end through a vein at the groin and hooked the hose up to a powerful heart-bypass device in the operating room to create suction.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">"Once in place, the AngioVac quickly sucked the deadly clot out of Mr. Dunlap's heart and filtered out the solid tissue," said Moriarty, a UCLA interventional radiologist with expertise in clot removal and cardiovascular imaging. "The system then restored the cleansed blood through a blood vessel near the groin, eliminating the need for a blood transfusion."</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Open-heart surgery takes twice as long to perform and often requires the surgeon to divide the breastbone lengthwise down the middle and spread the halves apart to access the heart. After the heart is repaired, surgeons use wires to hold the breastbone and ribs in place as they heal. The procedure can necessitate extended rehabilitation before the patient makes a full recovery.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">"Retrieving a clot from within the heart used to require open-heart surgery, resulting in longer hospitalization, recovery and rehabilitation times compared to the minimally invasive approach provided by the AngioVac system," said Dr. Murray Kwon, a UCLA cardiothoracic surgeon who collaborated on Dunlap's procedure.</span></div>

Nearly 100,000 Americans die each year when a clot breaks away from the blood-vessel wall and lodges in the lungs or heart. In one of every four cases, sudden death is the only clue an individual is suffering from the condition.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The app has four options, search food, capture food, browse for food photos and pronounce the name of the food.</span></div>

To reduce the risk that the patient develops hypothermia from too many units of cold blood, a blood warmer can be used. It is important to set up the warmer in advance, because it needs some time to work, so if nurses think one might be needed, they may start pre-warming it to make it readily available.</span></div>

St. Vincent’s Home operates under the management of the Association of the Ladies of  Charity (Damas de la Caridad). Since June 1973, St. Vincent’s Home’s services have been administered by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">St. Vincent’s Home was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commissionon March 16, 1966 . It was fully accredited as a home for Older Persons on April 14, 1975 by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the first accredited home for older persons in Bacolod City. It is also an accredited member-agency of the City and Provincial Development Councils of Bacolod.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The Home’s beginnings can be traced back to 1960 when a temporary shelter was set up by the Association of the the Ladies of Charity (organized by Fr. Jacinto Iroz, CM) to house the crippled, blind and deaf elderlies roaming the streets as mendicants, found and brought to the Home by the members of the Association. Later, the Association began to take in the orphaned or abandoned children and also some marginal families.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Three years later, through the leadership of Dona Carmen Lizares, a new building was built on the two-hectare lot donated by Dr. Antonio Lizares in Tangub, near the old Bacolod Airport. This was inaugurated on December 8, 1963. Since that time, new cottages and new facilities have been built to house and serve the needs of the increasing number of residents in the Home.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">On March 16, 1966, the Home was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-profit institution.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">In June 1973, the administration of the Home was turned over to the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Although the Sisters’ major concerns were the tasks of running the Home and their community life, the charism of their Holy Founders asked that they expand their work to cover the wider community. So, they established an outreach program for the poor families through catechetical instructions; through medical assistance to the sick especially those who cannot be admitted to the village because of contagious diseases and; through emergency assistance to those in a crisis situation.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Two years later, on April 14, 1975, the Home was fully accredited as a Home for Older Persons by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the first of its kind in Bacolod City. <span style="font-size: large;">Inspired by existing ingestible devices that can measure body temperature, and others that take internal digestive-tract images, a group of researchers from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology set out to design a sensor that would measure heart and respiratory rate, as well as temperature, from inside the digestive tract.</span></div>

Listening to the sounds of the chest is one of the oldest medical diagnostic techniques, practiced by Hippocrates in ancient Greece. She was one of two "Family Doctors". The other one was Dr. Eulalio Berroya. He would come to our hose whenever someone was sick. He would carry his black bag and he rode a bicycle. Doktora Maria would eventually open a Maternity Clinic in front of her houyse along our street and Dr. Berroya's clinic would be at the garage of his home, complete with Kaimito, Chesa, Atis and Mabolo trees. It is either they would come to our house and the houses of our community or they would be attending to patients in their clinics.  Eventually both good doctors retires and no doctor in our community made house calls anymore. </span></div>

These have now evolved into Barangay Health Centers and Rural Health Units as a result of the “devolution” of National Health Care as per the 1991 Local Government Code. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Thus, the local community doctor is now extinct and another level of public health care has ceased to exist. There are of course private clinics that cater to public health care but these are usually stand-alone clinics with no diagnostic capabilities. In public barangay health centers and RHUs there is limited capabilities with regards to diagnostics and even emergency treatment. Also, these health centers are overwhelmed by sheer numbers of those who need basic health care particularly from those who belong to the lower income levels. Such cases are referred to tertiary hospitals that in most cases are far from those who need urgent health care much less critical diagnostic services.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This is brought about by population pressure and a downstream result is urban sprawl with not enough health care centers to serve the burgeoning population. Most of the residents of these urban sprawls are middle class families who can also afford private clinics for their primary health care. The problem is the availability of such centers.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The cost for Basic consultation is Php300.00 and laboratory costs can be half what it would be charged in private hospitals. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Each FamilyDoc branch is a “three-in-one” medical center, offering the services of a clinic, diagnostic facility (with laboratory and imaging), and pharmacy. Basic consultation costs around P300, while laboratory tests cost half that charged by private hospitals.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">“Ultimately, the goal of FamilyDoc is access,” says Dr. Mike Santos, AC Health medical director, who is assigned to the branch in Brgy. Buhay na Tubig.  “We’ve  made it so affordable that instead of patients asking their neighbor what to take for a cough, they go to their primary care doctor. That’s what we want to happen in all FamilyDoc branches: That people will trust us enough to give preventive care,” Dr. Mike Santos, AC Health Medical Director said.</span></div>
