Our wellness is our greatest priority. When we nurture ourselves, doors open; when we neglect ourselves, it can reach out to every area of our lives. Supporting our wellness builds stronger relationships, heightens productivity, improves our health and can even be a catalyst for career progression. However, it is a little more challenging to practice wellness in an office environment, so here are some tips to get you started.

1) Find a place where you can meditate
Meditating is the perfect refresh. It splits up a long day, lowers stress and tension that can build up and can also remind you to appreciate the present moment. When the 2 pm slump approaches or we’ve hit a mental block; taking ten minutes away to meditate is a great way to reset. The obstacle is finding a quiet space to practice independently, without being disturbed (a toilet cubicle works well if there are no alternatives). If you have headphones, another way to support your practice is through a guided meditation app (popular choices are Headspace or Calm).

2) Drink water (lots and lots)
Water is an invaluable resource for our bodies; a lack of water can lead to countless ailments. However, in a busy workday, it’s easy for us to forget to drink enough water. A great way to keep water at the forefront of your mind is to keep a water bottle at your side throughout the day.

3) Eat a nutritious lunch
We often forget that our bodies are brilliant machines working away, without us even realizing. Nevertheless, the quality of fuel we put in them directly determines how well the body functions; a simple change in diet can help your body to work at its optimum. Including avocado or olive oil in your lunch brings an excellent source of omega 3, pomegranates have anti-plaque benefits so are a great alternative to a sugary snack, papaya is perfect for the skin and is also great for digestion.

4) Yoga at your desk
Don’t be scared. There is a way to practice at your desk without looking silly. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there that have discreet yoga poses that you can pick and choose from. These can range from simply stretching your wrists to performing more complex poses such as upward dog against your desk. However you feel comfortable, a simple pause in the day to stretch can spark new life into your mind and body.

5) Writing positive affirmations
Writing affirmations at work is my favorite part of the day and also a great way to reach 5 pm when you’re already in going home mode. Louise Hay was a motivational author, and a great source of positive affirmations to use. If you’re like many of us, and sometimes struggle with self-esteem, try writing “I love and accept myself exactly as I am” on a page in your notebook. This is a great way to practice self-love and restore confidence.
